Patient and Public Involvement
The NHS aims to put the patient at the centre of everything it does and this Trust is working to continue developing good patient and public and involvement (PPI) practice. In addition to the many benefits, there is a legal duty for NHS Trust’s to have patient and public involvement. This can include consulting with patients and the public on service planning and operation, and in the development of proposals for changes. This is a statutory duty, which means consulting and involving:
- not just when a major change is proposed, but in ongoing service planning
- not just in the consideration of a proposal, but in the development of that proposal; and
- in decisions about general service delivery, not just major changes.
Quality Assurance Audits
This Quality Assurance Audit programme involves unannounced ward and clinic inspections by teams of three, in at least two areas every day across the hospitals’ wards and clinics. Comprising two senior nurses and an independent external representative from the community, the teams visit a ward or clinic and inspect the standards of care provided to patients in that setting including cleanliness, assistance with meals, medication and records.
The external independent representatives are from local voluntary and community groups such as Age UK, the Older People’s Forum and patient groups. They are on every audit team and are primarily responsible for talking with patients and families to listen to their feedback. The participation of external representatives who bring independence and an outside view from a fresh pair of eyes is incredibly valuable. At the end of each audit all members of the team share their findings with the ward they have visited with any action points.

Members can choose how much they wish to get involved. You can simply receive our hospital magazine, or if you would like to be more involved, you can attend talks and events, take part in surveys, join our Patient Panel or stand for election as a Governor. The Patients Panel is made up of a small number of members who are invited to give more detailed feedback on a range of projects and services. We are hoping to grow this panel in the future and anyone who is interested can email firstname.lastname@example.org
Groups and Committees
There are over 60 groups with patient and public representation managed by specialty, which meet throughout the year to discuss suggestions for improvements. The Trust also works closely with several voluntary organisations such as Keeping Abreast and the Norfolk Liver Group who also meet to raise any issues and feed these back to the Trust.
Healthwatch is the new independent consumer champion created to gather and represent the views of the public. Healthwatch aims to make sure that the views of the public and people who use services are taken into account.
Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee (HOSC)
Overview and Scrutiny Committees are held by local councils with social services responsibilities (in our case Norfolk County Council) and they have the power to scrutinise health services. This contributes to their wider role in health improvement and reducing health inequalities for their areas.
